Venice – City on the water

Venice, it‘s a unique place, famous with water roads and bridges. There are 117 small islands, 150 channels, 400 bridges. In Venice your can travel on foot or by ships. It‘s the capital of Veneto region in northeast Italy the Venice. Since 1987 it has been included tp UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You can reach Venice by train or by bus. If you deside to go by car, from Bergamo airport to Venice road taxes cost about 15 Eur. Of course you know, that you can‘t go to Venice centre by car, you must leave the car in the parking, there are some parking places: San Giuliano (12 Eur/24 h) and reach the island by bus (it costs about 1,5 Eur., travel duration 10 min), Tronchetto (21 Eur/24 h), Piazzale Roma (23,40-29 Eur/24 h).

What to visit in Venice:

Grand Canal

The Grand Canal is the largest canal in Venice, which is twisting through the city about 4 km. Along the Grand canal had lived rich and famous Venician families. Although all the houses lost they‘re glory and colorfulness, you can see that the canal is full of life and uproar.

Doge’s Palace

Doge’s Palace was build in IX c. by protective aims, later it was damaged by fire, nowadays the palace is dated of XVI-XV c. Inside you can visit famous artist decorated rooms and halls. Doge’s Palace is connected by bridge with older jail, through this bridge is suspects were led to the survey.

Saint Mark’s Basilica

If you are in Venice you must visit Saint Mark’s Basilica and St Mark Square , they are the most popular places in the city. Basilic structure looks like the cross shape. Fasade, doms and walls are decorated in mosaics, more reflecting byzantine art traditions. Pala d‘Oro is the gold and jewel decorated basilic altar. There are more then 100 churches relic.

Bridge of Sighs

The bridge was designed by architect Antonio Contino in XVI c. It was built to connect old and new bridges. Bridge of Sighs was named due to prisoners which were leading to the death, it was the last sight which they had seen in the life. The bridge was being for two years and it‘s the best example of Italian Renaissance in the world. Most sculpture present sad and angry faces.

If you kiss under this bridge, you will get forever love, according to the legend.

Piazza San Marco

St Mark Square is the biggest and very popular place in Venice, Napoleon had said: ,,<…> is the most elegant European site“. Every time this place was the most important. There are many outdoor cafes, where you can drink wonderful taste italian cafe.

Rialto Bridge

Rialto bridge was built in XVI c., later rebuilt, it is the one of the oldest and very popular bridge between the tourists. There are Rialto bazaar, where you can buy fresh vegetables, fish and other products. The bridge connecting St Peter and St. Markaus districts. More than 300 y. was only one bridge, by which you can reach the Grand Canal by foot.

Lido island (Lido di Venezia)

Lido island you can reach by vaparetto No. 1 from Piazzale Roma, it is the place there you can relax and have a meal in the best and cheap restaurants in Venice.

Murano island

Murano island is the most popular due murano glass and also there are many water taxi. Earlier glass products and mirrors were making only in this place, mirror craftsman were very important persons and they couln‘t  leave the island. It‘s a calm and beautiful island. You can visit museums, glass factory there you can see all glass making process. You can buy glass art piece, which will be made near your eyes. You can reach the island by vaporetto No. 3 from Piazzale Roma.

And also:

  • You can visit Venize by foot or by vaporetto (water bus), single ticket cost 7,5 Eur. We recommend you to start your travel from Piazzale Roma till San Marco by vaporetto No. 1, your travel will be through the Grand Canal;
  • Gondola is the traditional Venice boat, you can swim with it, it costs 80-100 Eur./30 min.;
  • Be carefull, the canals are not protected by fences, don‘t walk near the edge. To fall into the canal is very easy and it happens very often J
  • Everything is payable, even maps, in tourism information center Venice city map cost 3 Eur.;
  • There are many tourists and it doesn‘t matter it‘s summer or winter time;
  • The cheapest market is named „Coop“;
  • There are many masquerade shops, go inside and you will see impressive beauty masks.
