When in Crete, you simply have to visit the Balos Lagoon, called the pearl of Crete. It is one of the most beautiful beaches of Crete, located in the Western part of the island. It is not without a reason that Prince Charles and Princess Diana spent their honeymoon here. It is said that the sea here is like a rainbow; shimmering with many colors.
You can reach the Balos Lagoon in the following two ways: by car or by ship. If you travel by car, you will have to drive on a gravel road for seven kilometers and then walk for two more kilometers. It will be difficult to descend the mountain and even more difficult to climb it in extreme heat. Therefore, we do not advise people to choose this way of travelling if they have any heart diseases or reduced mobility. The entry fee per person is 1 euro. However, this way you will be able to see the beauty of the Balos Lagoon from up high, as well as the goats and lambs running around. If you choose to travel by ship, you will have to go to the port city of Kissamos. There you will have to buy a ticket for 27 Euros and go to the Gramvousa Island where in the olden days the Venetians fortress was located. Nowadays the fortress is abandoned. If you wish to do so, you will be able to ascend the steep stairs and to look at the Balos Lagoon from above. Later you will be disembarked on the heavenly beautiful beach of the Balos Lagoon. There you will be able to spare about 2.5 hours for swimming.
